Trust that he/she wants to fish as bad as you and if they are calling it at that point (after the gas to get there), it's probably the right call. The captain may have them, but as a HO, you are responsible for yourself.Ĥ) If the boat owner says at the dock that the weather is too bad, be OK with it. You may want to buy an inflatable PFD for yourself for particularly rough days if you think you'll be HO'ing more than once (just a thought). Obviously, don't be freaking out asking a ton of questions but be sure you are going to be safe for your and the captain's sake.ģ) Watch the weather yourself - if it's gonna rain, bring rain gear. If the weather looks rough ask the captain if there is anything you should be aware of in terms of where to (or where not to) hold on etc. The worst thing that could happen is to get out there and then make the person turn around.Ģ) Take a good look at the boat you are in, find things you may trip over, etc. You may really want to go fishing bad, but be honest with yourself. A couple thoughts I had for people HO'ing with someone they don't know:ġ) If you feel unsafe going out, say something up front right away. Since I know the captain well, trust him completely, and know he can handle his boat extremely well I was on board with going out when he said 'lets give it a try' - besides, I want to fish. Part 1: At the dock - we both knew the weather would be iffy for his boat, but it looked do-able. Here is the message of the day: trust boat owner when it comes to weather and end times. It's a smaller boat, but one that can find the fish. I fish with the same guy almost all the time. I was out with my buddy on his boat (since I don't own my own). Thursday out of Breezy wasn't great weather, and the forecast was wrong again (what a surprise ).

I'm gonna report on the experience in hopes that it provides some perspective to HO's (and those looking for HO's) about what to do if the weather is bad (and hopefully help some people be more apt to ask to HO or respond to those looking for HO's). I'm not going to report on the fishing per say because we only fished for about 20 minutes (one fish, WTFB, white parachute).
